CEGRAD-UCC Launches 10th Anniversary Celebration

The Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation of University of Cape Coast (CEGRAD-UCC) has officially outdoored its 10th anniversary celebrations on the theme: "Yesterday, Today and the Future: Gender Activism at UCC and Beyond."

Several activities including fundraising, documentary production, Open Day, among others, have been lined up to mark the Centre’s decade of existence.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Mrs. Rosemond Boohene, at the 10th anniversary launch, congratulated CEGRAD for the giant feat and lauded the pioneers for their determination to make CEGRAD a formidable force to reckon with on campus.

She made special mention and praised former Directors of CEGRAD, Prof. Akua Biritwum and Dr. Genevive Adukpo, as well as Prof. D.D Kuupole, a former Vice-Chancellor of UCC for their contribution to the Centre. 

"I look forward to the next 10 years, where CEGRAD will be a world acclaim centre of excellence for gender issues", Prof. Boohene continued. 

The Director of CEGRAD, Prof. Georgina Yaa Oduro, expressed gratitude to her predecessors for their invaluable contributions to the Centre. She extolled the remarkable achievements of the Centre, including the publishing of a Gender Policy.

Prof. Oduro announced that plans were afoot to introduce a liberal programme on gender in the University, as well as short courses on gender.

She also thanked the student bodies on campus for their enormous support for CEGRAD. 

At the launch, various speakers took turns to walk the audience through the history of the Centre and shared solidarity messages with the audience as regards the Centre for its gender advocacy in the University and beyond.

The immediate past Pro Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, unveiled the anniversary logo of CEGRAD.

The grand durbar of the celebration is scheduled for August 15, 2023.

 

The anniversary launch was also graced by a former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D.D. Kuupole, under whose tenure the idea of creating the Centre was birthed. He was impressed with the gains CEGRAD has made in its ten years of existence and suggested that the Centre be upgraded to a Directorate or Institute to further enhance its impact in gender-based research and advocacy. He also appealed for male involvement in the activities of CEGRAD.

The Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD) is a non-teaching Centre established in the University of Cape Coast. CEGRAD focuses mainly on Research, Advocacy and Outreach and operates under two core departments, Research and Outreach and Advocacy who support the Director in the delivery of the Centre’s mandate, mission and vision.
