Members of the Governing Council of University of Cape Coast,UCC, have paid fact-finding visit to some ongoing projects outside the University's main campus. 

 

The projectsd visited by Council members included the School of Agriculture Commercial and Research Farm at Twifo Wamaso Commercial Farm lands in the Central Region; Retreat Centre at Agona Nyakrom in the Central Region; and College of Distance Education (CoDE) Regional Study Centre at Dominase in the Ashanti Region.

 

 

The visit was as a result of the Governing Council of UCC's decision at its Special Meeting to protect the University's legally acquired lands from encroachment. 

 

To that end, three teams were constituted to embark on a visit to these three project sites of the University.

 

The Chaiman of the Governing Council, Prof. Obeng Mireku and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, led the Wamaso team. 

 

The Director of Consular and General Services, Mrs. Alberta Graham led the team to Dominase, whilst Bishop Awortwi Pratt was the leader of the team to Agona Nyarkrom.

 

 

At Wamaso, the team was taken on a tour on 419 acre land and its boundaries by Dr. EMmmanuel Ogyari of the School Agriculture and Mr. Twumasi Atta Amankwa of the Directorate of Physical Development and Estate Management (DPDEM). 

It was established that the School of Agriculture had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Twifo Oil Palm Plantations to develop 100 acres of the land for oil palm plantation.

Discussions are also ongoing for Bunso Cocoa College to also develop part of the land for Cocoa plantations.

 

At the UCC level, the School of Agriculture is also mobilising resources to establish a commercial farm and research station on some portion of the land whilst the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals has plans to cultivate herbal plants. 

 

An abandoned six-unit primary school on the land had been handed over to the University for a research centre.

 

The team recommended that other faculties/schools and departments should fashion out  projects on the remaining undeveloped lands.

 

Also, Management was tasked to ensure that sign posts and pillars were  erected on the boundaries and other spots on the land to ward off encroachers.

 

The team as part of its mandate was to develop a comprehensive report to Council.

 

 

At Dominase, Mrs. Alberta Yaa Graham, along with the Provost of CoDE, Prof. Anokye Mohammed Adam, was conducted round by the constructor. 

 

The constructor, Mr. Isaac Marfo, told the team that the facility would be completed by June 2023. 

 

The Provost urged the constructor to complete the work on schedule.

 

 

The team, led by Bishop Awortwi Pratt, was happy at the speed of work.

 

The constructor promised the team to complete the work by February 2023.
